I ran the Shore to Shore 13k race Aug 7th, it Starts at Oliphant Beach on the Huron Lake side of the Bruce Peninsula cross over to Wiarton on the Georgian bay side.

On the Bus ride from the Finish to the Start I'm talking to this guy and we start talking about the course. He's run it a bunch of times and is a local, I tell him it's my first, and I drove it last night. I tell it seemed not too bad, a bunch of rollers, and a gentle climb from the start, but seemed net downhill. He laughed, and said it's very deceiving, it climbs for about the first 9k with 2k of constant climb at one part, and then there are some downhill parts near the end. Yiks!!

My goal was 4:20 pace, maybe I could do better on a cool day on a fairly flat course. Should I adjust it now after talking to this guy or go for it. I decide to go for and adjust on the course. I've been marathon training, and didn't really prepare just for this race, I did a 25k run the Friday before and then took just 2 days off to rest and recover before the race.

It got Hot fast even with the 8am start by the water! It must have been 25+C at race start, but I'm not sure, Water and sponges every 2km or so. I took advantage of the sponges to cool myself down every time. I didn't run with a water bottle this time, usually I do as a comfort blanket even for 10k races. I was soaked in no time with sweat!!

The field was pretty fast for a race of some 200 runners, many from the Saugeen Track Club. The winner came in with a 3:29 pace (45:20) and 15 runners came in under 4:00 pace.

About 11k mark a guy about 100m ahead of me stumbled off the course and went down because of the heat, a biker was there fast to aid him. Also at the finish my wife saw the 3rd guy come in collapse and need aid and oxygen. It was pretty scarry for the fans not to mention the guys wife and small child that cried as they watch him fall.

The course was definitely challenging, but I held my own through most of it, and finish fast.
