Tough race today, how does it get so hot, and a 1:30pm start time just to make sure we have full heat. I picked up a cold a few days ago and almost bailed on this race. I went out pretty hard, I used Taylor Reid as a rabbit, and ran a 3:35 first km and kept him in my view for the most part. (he finished 3 min ahead of me). The second half was rough, I felt like I was going backwards with the heat and hills, but no one was catching me, so I kept pushing. I finished in 2nd place overall, 39:32, not my fastest 10k but this course has some loose rail trail, and pretty tough rolling hills. Course was 10k right on this year, last year was a bit short.
The boys had a blast doing their 1 mile and everyone finished hard!!

race was closer to 11.5km, 2 loops with a steep over 1km hill climb at the start of each loop. The trails seemed to be mostly downhill, tight single track with twists. The first few km my mouth was very dry and I had a hard time controlling my breathing, after a drink at the first aid station that got better.
I felt I was holding back in the trails so I didn't injure my ankle again. After the first loop I started to feel better I made my move on a few people during that loop, and tried to catch the 3rd place finisher in my AG but couldn't do it with all the slow twisting trails.

Fun course, although a slower course because of all the climbs and tight turning trails.
Relay for Life Chatham Jun-16-12 42.20 km 3:12:00 4:33

Started just after 1am sometime, did 3 laps with Kylar to warm up then had at it. The first 10 or so laps I was 4:25 pace, almost right on and I couldn't see what my pace was to judge it, I just went totally by feel. At the end of each km the light on my Garmin showed me my pace. I slowed slightly in the second half. Most of the race I was in the outer lanes, but zig zagged to stay out of other walkers way. Spend a lot of time thinking and counting laps, 1 -2 and a half, 1 -2 and a half... repeat until 42.2 km

My silent goal going in was 3:30, I thought this would be a stretch since I haven't been marathon training at all and I only got 1 hour sleep before I started running. Very surprised.

Course was a little long 10.25km, that hill was about 2k long, not too bad result, if the course was flat and the accurate, I would have had a great time.

looks like a great course, 2x a big hill ;-)

Pretty hot day, dusty gravel trail, turned out to be a solid run. The first 200m and final 200m are on grass, the rest is on the Cataract trail towards Belfountain that I often run. I started hard, and went to the front, after about 500m I looked at my watch, 3:15 or something like that and after the first km I was about 3:30. I just kept hammering forward, went through 5km 19:11, that's what the lead biker told me. I saw the second place guy about 300+ meters back so I was ahead of him over 600m at the half. I was starting to tire, and didn't figure anyone was going to sneak up on me and my pace slipped a bit. Made it back and broke the tape 38:58.

Great little race, kids raced for free just ahead of us and got a free toy too. Free face painting, bouncy castle and free burgers and hot dogs. They had so many draw prizes I think almost everyone got one, I picked up Bridie a 1.5 hour facial for her troubles.

Not a race but a worth while cause and a worth while dedication to a great man that passed away way too soon.

This Friday starting at 7pm to Saturday at 7am I'm participating in the Relay for life with my wife's family. I'll be showing up to the event at about 2am to run my first ever 50k around a high school running track in Chatham.

50k around a track starting at 2am that is ultra running.

OK that many left turns starts to hurt!! The last 8k of a marathon are always tough, I've learnt that the difference between a Marathon and 50k are just doubling down on the pain kilometres.

bit windy but solid effort

The winner had a 100m lead on me before I knew it and probably had more like 200m before too long. 3:25 through first km so I knew that I had to let him go catch him later. 3rd k was up a slight incline and against the wind, at the turn with about 2k to go I stated to pick it up and made some groiund on the leader. The final k was rough I pushed hard as I could but didn't have enough to catch him, probably 50m back.

"those first two guys came in like gazelles..."

Cold windy day, not so confident going into this race, got a better result then expected, but oh so close to another Gold. I guess this is pay backs for the gift I got 2 years ago at this race.

Great race, and had a great run, I'll be back, to run it hard again.

That avg pace seems a bit fast but SportStats thinks that is what it is. It could be, the distance seemed pretty accurate.

The avg pace should be 4:22, the course was changed to 12.8k not the original 13.3k I believe.

Hot day, one hill to run twice, learned a lesson today, if I want to run well in a 5k race treat the race the same as I would a marathon. Just because it is shorter doesn't mean it can be taken lighter.
I knew today wouldn't be a PB, but want to be a bit faster, the first few kms I felt strong the last km I felt dead.
3:41 - congested start (mile 1 5:55)
3:55 - up hill
3:50 - down hill turn around and come back up the hill
3:47 - pick it up
3:50 - legs feeling dead
3:14 - 13s of extra, trying to hold off one last runner and getting out kicked by a <12 year old boy, great Fathers Day!!

Very wet and windy (30k/h) especially the final 4k
3:42, 3:44, 3:49, 3:50, 3:55, 4:04, 3:59, 3:55, 3:38(kick)

Race started and I went out semi comfortable, mile one 5:55. Since I knew the way back would be into a stiff wind I tried to stay on pace and conserve energy instead of trying to bank time. I crossed Humber River and slammed into the wind as the trail followed the river, then up and back across the river and straight into the wind for the next 4 km. 3 miles in 18:2x I knew I was off pace but I was passing a few guys and making ground on a few others so I knew my effort level must have been at least steady. Mile 4 in 25:0x trying to bring it home as fast as possible, checked my shoulder a few times, to make sure none of the guys I dropped tried sneaking up on me, no one was close. I finished hard.

A bit disappointed but with the weather, it just wasn't possible to go faster.

Holly stiff competition Batman!! Had a great time!!
I found the course very tough, and a super workout, I'm hooked. I finished ahead of some sub 18:00 5k runners, I'm happy. Had a pretty bad cold all week and still do, sounds like a good excuse. Course short by about 260m. Total distance 7.74

well, not a perfect day for racing, pretty windy 25k/h on the home stretch and pretty humid in between rains.Spent the morning chasing around and carrying kids at Bridie's school.
1k 3:37 - took lead near end of this km
2k 3:42 - lead this km
3k 3:48 - lead this km
4k 3:50 - lead this km
5k 3:33 - lead half this km, the wrong half though

18:28 - 2nd Overall, 2nd in my age group, but got the first place award, a neat plaque with a horse shoe on it, and a couple gift certificates.

Neck and neck for most of the race with this wee little guy, 31. He had more left for a final kick.
If I didn't race Wednesday, maybe I would have done better, but I'm pretty happy with this result for this day.
Bridie Video taped it, Man I look like a lot heavier runner then I thought I was. Watching the video I feel like I'm running faster then it looks. If you have never video taped yourself you should it's interesting to see.

The Earl brothers are 48 and twins, Rob has had very low numbers in his early days. The Earls were ranked top two in Ontario in High School, Rob has had times like 28:xx 10k, 13:xx track 5k (or something crazy like that) Rob had no problems letting me know his past Laughing they are both great guys.
(* times best I can remember)

We finished 2nd overall, what a great overall event though wow. Very corporate so many (mostly) social runners and walkers, but a great list of great runners too (met Michael Hay triathlete). Had to do a lot of zig zagging through the people. 2 loops (2.5k per loop, the course was a hair short 50m) and 327 teams! Our time was 1:09:15 avg 17:19 per 5k!!! I ran 18:20!! I felt so good, I looked at my watch about 750m in and saw 3:30 pace, I thought I feel good, but I better back off a bit. I thought 18:30 would be an aggressive goal last night with all the people, even without the people I thought that would be aggressive.

I was honoured just to be asked to run with these guys.

Windy day (25k/h), on a course that was not really meant for racing on, rolling hills, off road sections. I was shooting for 37:xx. Ran out front for the first loop, 2nd place just off my shoulder. First loop was 18:5x right on plan, just past 6k we headed back into the wind and I thought I'd let him take the lead for a while and I could hunt him for a change. That didn't work he had more power going into the wind, and created enough of a lead that I couldn't catch him again. Late in the race I could tell my legs were not 100% recovered from the marathon, I didn't figure they would be. Still finished hard with 2nd place. Good run for weather, course and my condition, not far off goal at all.

Tough course, windy day, last 8k was pretty much incline and against the wind, not much too steep just long inclines.
3:05!!! I was pretty close to 3:00 until the last 8k it was just too much hill and wind to hold pace.
That course wasn't going to give up many sub 3's today, not easily. 14th overall, I was 20th at half.

The race was all on a closed highway, it started to suck after a while. At about 26k we ran into the back of the pack of the 1/2 marathoners, so after that I was avoiding them and had no idea who I was racing against anymore, which was a bit motivational. It was organized very well and marshaled great too, nice to not have to worry about any cars or pedestrians, roads were totally shut down.
